Time Enough For... Later.

It's been a while since I wrote a blag, so I thought I'd give it another go.

On the other hand, I have five half-formed blags in my mind, but the second I put them to paper (er, screen), they evaporate. I have a lot of things I'd like to work on - the blag, my garden, building projects, and so on - but I'm lacking material for all of them. I need ideas to work on the blag, I need supports and connectors to work on the garden, and I need glue and cement nails (and wood and counters and wood putty and two more cupboards) to work in the kitchen. I need wood for living room shelves, and I need pipe and cement for the bridge. But, most of all, I need a block of time for each of those things. It would only take an hour or so to get all the supplies I need, but upwards of two hours for each task. Granted, the weather is great and all, but I need time to work on it. And parts. At the same time.

Long ago, when I was but a youth, I had time to spare; I was even, once or twice, bored. Usually, I could busy myself with playing army men, or Legos, or computers. Now, of course, I have 9-12 hours less in the day, due to work, taking care of kids, general household maintenance, etc. Granted, I sleep less, but I'm not sure that's a plus. These days, I simply have more things to do; when I was a kid, I had one or two chores (that generally took no more than half an hour), school (I was almost always done before lunch), and that was it. I could be free of any and all tasks by 1pm - leaving at least 7 hours of "play time" (plus an hour for supper, of course). Now, I get home from work at 5:30 or so; if I need to use power tools, I'm going to have to do that before 8, when the kids go to bed, and supper and playtime cuts that down to almost nil.

Not that I'm complaining. I've gotten a lot done recently; I've actually finished up projects, and I haven't added many more extras. I think the trouble is that, while I can see how many tasks I have now, and how many tasks I have completed, I'm always surprised at the amount of unplanned work required for any given task. Build Xan a computer? Easy! I do that all the time! Except, wait, I don't have a monitor. Ah, there one is - all I need to do is replace the backlight. Oh joy - the time to build this machine just went up by a day and a backlight. Sigh.

Well, this blag has rambled on a bit, hasn't it? I suppose I'm just going over what I've said before; there just isn't enough time in the day. Writing, programming, electrical projects, and more have fallen to the wayside, while household projects and babysitting have taken center stage. Someday, I'll be able to return to them, but for now... I've got work to do.
