Well, after my comparative study on search engines, I figured I'd blag about my experience with the newest search engine, Wolfram|Alpha. It was touted as a possible "Google killer" by the media, but after it came out, it was touted as a great way to access data. Why, it could do math for you! It could make graphs! It could show you statistics!

Only it doesn't work.

I searched Google for "unemployment graph" and found this blog which had a picture that worked out just fine. However, I thought, "Gee, this would be a perfect seach for that new search engine," and typed it in.

I got the average unemployment of the last ten years for all countries combined. That data is completely worthless, as far as I can tell; even after telling it to plor the data, graph the data, show a range of years, and so on, it would give me nothing better than last year's unemployment rates. All in all, I got exactly what I was looking for after a single Google search, but after 5 minutes of fruitless searching, Wolfram|Alpha gave me nothing.

It might be a great search engine for some facts and figures, but I haven't been able to figure out what they are yet... and it's definitely not enough to pull me away from Google any time soon.
